What's going on here?
"What's a future investment car?"
Many people: "458 Speciale"
Yet prices are down 14% globally since 2022.
Tell me more
In 2022 the average price for a 458 Speciale stood at £352,000.
Today, the average price is at c. £300,000. A 14% fall.
Perhaps that's just poorer spec cars coming to market? Nope.
June 2022: A RHD, Rosso Mugello, 4,389 mile car sold in the UK for £387,700.
June 2024: A RHD, Blue Tour de France, 2,450 mile car sold in the UK for £335,650.
Here you've got a lower mileage car, in arguably a better spec, selling for 13% less than 2 years ago.
Why should I care
458 Speciale's boomed bigger than most with prices rising 32% from 2020 to 2022, partly driven by Covid price spikes but primarily down to talk of the Speciale being a great a great investment car.
To steal a phrase (and adapt it slightly): "Now the key to making money in a situation like this is to position yourself now before the [crowds agree its an investment car] because by the time you read about it in The Wall Street Journal, it's already too late."
We saw similar with Series I E-Type's. Widely regarded as a great investment and then what followed in recent years is very similar to the rise and then falls seen above.
It's still early days but don't believe everything you hear or read on the internet (the irony isn't lost on me here). Buy things you love first and foremost, don't worry about what everyone else might be saying. After all, the contrarian view is immensely powerful.
